We turn down ad work. Not often, but often enough that it’s worth explaining why.
Someone comes to us ready to spend $3,000 a month on Google Ads. They’ve got the budget approved, they’re motivated, they know their competitors are already there. And instead of saying “Brilliant, let’s go!” we take a look at their website and say, “Hold on, let’s not do that yet.”
It’s not a negotiating tactic. It’s because we’ve watched what happens when brilliant ads send traffic to a slow, confusing site. The ads do their job perfectly. The website undoes all of it. And 4 months later, a business owner who was genuinely excited about growth has concluded that online advertising is a waste of money. That’s the outcome we’re trying to avoid.

Your website makes the sale, not your ads
There’s a common misconception that ads do the selling. They don’t. Ads do the inviting. That’s it. A well-crafted Google Ad or Meta campaign has exactly one job: convince someone to click. Once they’ve clicked, the ad’s work is done, and it hands the baton over to your website.
And this is where it all starts to fall apart.
You can have the sharpest ad copy in your industry. You can have creative that would make a Cannes judge weep. You can have keyword targeting so precise it’s borderline telepathic. But if that click lands on a page that takes 8 seconds to load, or buries your phone number in the footer, or makes people guess what you actually do… well, now you’ve just paid for the privilege of watching someone leave.
Your problem isn’t traffic problem; it’s a conversion problem. And no amount of ad spend fixes it. In fact, more spend makes it worse, because you’re just paying to lose more people, faster.
Here’s what’s happening
Let’s run some numbers, because this is where it really hits home.
| Website A (sorted) | Website B (needs work) | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly ads spend | $3,000 | $3,000 |
| Clicks | 750 | 750 |
| Conversion rate | 5% | 1% |
| Leads generated | 37 | 7 |
| Cost per lead | $81 | $428 |
Say you’re spending $3,000 a month on Google Ads. Your cost per click is $4, which gets you roughly 750 clicks. Now let’s look at two scenarios.
Same ads. Same spend. Same clicks. One website brings in 37 leads; the other brings in 7.
That’s not a small gap. That’s the difference between a campaign that funds your growth and a campaign you quietly switch off after 3 months while muttering that “Google Ads don’t work for our industry.”
Except Google Ads did work. They delivered 750 interested people to your door. Your door just wouldn’t open.
What’s stopping clicks turning into conversions and revenue?
In our experience, the culprits are:
Slow load times. This is the big one. Research consistently shows that a huge chunk of visitors bail if a page takes more than 3 seconds to load, and mobile users are even less patient. Every extra second is money out the door. And “slow” often isn’t some enormous problem that means your whole site needs a redesign; it’s a website that hasn’t been updated or maintained while being stuffed with uncompressed hero images and 14 plugins nobody’s audited since 2021.
No clear next step. People shouldn’t have to work out what to do. If your landing page has 6 competing calls to action (or worse, none at all) visitors freeze and leave. One page, one goal. Always.
What mobile experience? The majority of paid traffic in Australia now comes through mobile. If your buttons are too small to tap, your forms require pinch-zooming, or your menu collapses into chaos, you’re actively repelling most of your audience.
Sending traffic to your homepage. Your homepage is a hub. It’s built for people who already know you and want to explore. Someone who just clicked an ad for “emergency plumber Brunswick” doesn’t want your company history. They want a phone number and a promise you’ll turn up. Specific ads need specific landing pages.
Zero trust signals. No reviews, no real photos, no ABN, no proper contact details. In a world where scam sites are everywhere, people are rightly cautious. If your site doesn’t feel legitimate in the first few seconds, they’re gone.
Forms that ask for everything. Name, email, phone, company, budget, timeline, ABN, inside leg measurement, favourite colour, dog’s name. Every extra field costs you leads. Ask for what you genuinely need to start a conversation, and nothing more.
Why we’ll sometimes say no
Right, back to the awkward bit!
When we tell a business we won’t run their ads yet, it’s not a sales tactic and it’s not us being precious. It’s because we’ve learned that taking that money would make us complicit in a bad outcome.
Here’s the thing: if we happily run a campaign into a broken website, one of 2 things happens. Either it fails and you blame ads (f enough, from where you’re sitting), or it fails and you blame us. Either way, you’ve spent money you can’t get back, you’ve lost 3 to 6 months, and you’ve walked away believing digital marketing doesn’t work for businesses like yours.
That’s a rubbish outcome for everyone. We’d rather have an honest conversation upfront than a difficult one later.
We’re also not fans of the agency model where the costs are designed to burn you. Where the goal is simply to keep the retainer ticking over. Plenty of agencies will happily take your $3,000 a month indefinitely, send you a dashboard full of impressions and click-through rates, and never once mention that the actual problem is the website. Impressions are lovely. They don’t pay wages.
So we’d rather fix the foundations first. Sometimes that’s a full redesign and rebuild. Often, it’s web maintenance that is far more affordable and far less time-consuming. A few well-built landing pages, a serious speed cleanup, clearer messaging, and forms that don’t feel like a tax return. Then we turn the ads on, and everything works the way it’s supposed to.
The good news
If this is hitting a bit close to home, don’t panic. Website-driven revenue leaks are one of the most fixable problems in marketing, and the return is immediate.
Here’s why it’s such a good place to spend your money: improving your conversion rate improves everything! Better conversion doesn’t just improve your paid campaigns; it improves your organic traffic, your social referrals, your email clicks, the people who found you through a mate’s recommendation. You fix the site once and every single channel gets better.
Compare that to ad spend, which stops the moment you stop paying. Getting your website right is one of the few genuinely compounding investments in marketing.
And honestly? Going from 1% to 3% conversion isn’t some mystical achievement. It’s usually a handful of unglamorous fixes: compress the images, rewrite the headline so it actually says what you do, put the phone number where people can see it, build a proper landing page for each campaign, cut the form down to 3 fields.
Not exciting. But extremely effective for our clients!

Get the boring bits right, then go hard
Ads amplify whatever you’ve already got. If your website converts well, great ads pour fuel on a fire. If it doesn’t, ads just make the leak bigger and more expensive.
So before you increase your ad budget, have a proper look at where that traffic is landing. Click your own ads on your phone. Time the load. Try to find your contact details in under 5 seconds. Fill in your own enquiry form. If any part of that makes you wince, that’s your answer; and that’s where your next dollar should go.
Brilliant ads and a rubbish website is a revenue-destroying recipe. But brilliant ads and a website that’s genuinely ready? That’s when things get fun.

FAQs
Should I fix my website before I start running ads?
In most cases, yes. Ads send people somewhere else, and if that somewhere else is slow, confusing, or broken on mobile, you’re paying for visitors who bounce. You don’t need a full rebuild either. Sometimes a faster load time and a clearer call to action are enough to get moving. Not sure which camp you’re in? Book a free strategy call our director, Karyn Szulc, and we’ll give you a straight answer.
How do I know if my website is the problem, not my ads?
Check your numbers. If your click-through rate is healthy but nobody’s enquiring, the ads are doing their job and the website isn’t. Look at bounce rate, time on page, and mobile conversions specifically. Google Analytics will tell you most of the story. If the data’s a mess or you’re not sure what you’re looking at, our Melbourne-based agency is happy to take a look with you. First call is free!
What’s a good conversion rate for a small business website?
It varies by industry, but 2–5% is a reasonable benchmark for most service businesses. Under 1% and something’s genuinely wrong; usually speed, clarity, or trust. Above 5% and you’re doing well. The key thing is measuring your own baseline first, then improving from there rather than chasing someone else’s number. Context matters far more than averages. If you’d like to make sure your website is doing all it can, then book a no-obligation call with our director, Karyn Szulc. We work in all industries, all over Australia!
Should I send ad traffic to my homepage or a landing page?
Landing pages, always! Your homepage has to speak to everyone, which means it speaks to no one in particular. A dedicated landing page matches the promise in your ad, cuts the distractions, and gives one clear next step. It’s one of the fastest ways to lift conversions without touching your ad budget. We have an absolute banger of a copywriting team who can build these as part of our web design work. If you’d rather someone just had a look and told you straight, that’s what we’re here for. Book a free, no-strings call. We help all industries, all over Australia, no sales waffle.
